Di Montezemolo hails Rosberg ability

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has labelled Nico Rosberg as one of the best of the new generation of drivers in Formula 1.
Many expected Rosberg to be overshadowed by his Mercedes team-mate Michael Schumacher last year, but instead it was the young German who proved to be the team’s best driver, outpacing the seven-time world champion in the majority of races.

Di Montezemolo has been impressed with Rosberg's speed and intelligence in a Formula 1 car and he believes finishing 70 points ahead of Schumacher proves that he is one of the brightest young prospects on the grid.

"We have a new generation of drivers. I think Rosberg had a fantastic season. He is intelligent and quick. And to be quicker than Michael Schumacher all the time is the best proof. There can be different reasons, but I look at the times," he said.

"Vettel is another very clear example of the new generation of drivers. I think that there are other drivers that if they have a competitive car can be good. Rosberg is for sure one of the best of the new generation of drivers."

Speaking at Ferrari's winter retreat in the Dolomites, Fernando Alonso told reporters that he feels Schumacher will be a much bigger threat in 2011, despite his poor showing on his return to Formula 1.

Di Montezemolo was not surprised by Alonso’s assessment and he remains convinced that Schumacher still has a lot to give the sport

"I'm sure somebody else will say Hamilton, or Vettel. This is good, but let's wait for the first race of the season,” he said.

"Michael is part of my heart, he's part of my life. He's a very important part of the Ferrari history. I'm one of the few people in the world who have no doubts that he is a fantastic driver. We will see.

"I can see a very competitive season. For sure at least three competitive teams, maybe four, I don't know for sure."
